Diary of a Tiki-tern: Abby Christensen

Digital Tiki’s internship program is a wonderful way to get yourself into a work environment without being overwhelmed or thrown into something you are not qualified for.  Digital Tiki is a small company that is growing each day.  It was wonderful to work in a small environment with the same people every day to enhance my learning experience.  Lauren (Marketing Manager) worked with me the whole way through my internship and I knew if I ever had questions, she was the one to ask.  The atmosphere in the office was fun yet professional.  We set up goals for the summer then discussed them at the end during my 360 degree exit review and I was always treated with respect.  During the day we laughed and poked fun at each other to make the day fun and enjoyable.

Throughout my internship I worked with PhotoShop, DreamWeaver, PowerPoint, and WordPress.  I assisted the Digital Tiki Team with the creation of letter heads and envelope headings, printed promotion such as brochures, newsletters, and pamphlets as well as with the development of websites.  I’ve learned what it takes, on the marketing end, to promote a company and create a company image.  I’ve learned techniques and rules of thumb that I will be able to carry into the workforce after graduation.

Interning for Digital Tiki was a wonderful first job experience and would recommend the internship to any marketing of graphic design major.  I learned something new every day as well as enjoyed the atmosphere I worked in.

About Abby

Digital Tiki Marketing Intern – Summer 2010

I am a student at Iowa State University, beginning my senior year in the fall and planning to graduate in May of 2011.  I am double majoring in Marketing and Management and am one of the three captains of the Iowa State Swimming and Diving team.  I applied for the Digital Tiki Internship because I felt it would be an educational yet fun way to start my path into the business world.  I thought that working with a smaller company would give me the opportunity to be involved in marketing planning sessions, have hands on experience with products and learn a lot from the Digital Tiki team.  While at Digital Tiki I assisted the team with creating and putting together printed advertisements, brochures, pamphlets and mailings.  I am also in the process of learning how to put together a website and how to create a company image (Logo, website, theme).  After graduation I plan to return back to the Twin Cities and find a job in a marketing department or marketing firm.  I hope to bring my creativity and precision to the company and help them to grow as well as learning new techniques and being challenged along the way.  On the side, I would love to coach gymnastics and/or diving for a high school or club team.
